Michael L. Therrien, MD, MMM, EJD

Dr. Michael L. Therrien, Director of Quality and Director of Clinical Cardiology for the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute of Connecticut at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, has over twenty years of experience in general cardiology, critical care cardiology, and health care quality management. His clinical training is as a cardiac intensivist. He has expertise in heart attack care as well as the diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndromes. In addition, he is an expert in quality management, measurement of physician performance, development of clinical guidelines and pathways, clinical informatics, patient safety, and medical privacy. Additionally, he is the Medical Director of the Lipid Education Service of the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute of Connecticut.

Dr. Therrien's past experience includes the private practice of cardiology, medical direction of coronary and critical care units, direction of intermediate cardiac units, and academic cardiology. He has been involved in research, including several multi-center trials. He has also been instrumental in developing an information system at the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute to support a data mart on cardiac outcomes and digital cardiac imaging. In addition, he has extensive experience in the education and use of physician assistants in cardiology settings, creating one of the first total PA-covered hospital cardiac telemetry units in New England.

Dr. Therrien received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and a Master of Medical Management from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He received an Executive Juris Doctor degree from Concord Law School in 2006. His Bachelor of Arts degree is from the Johns Hopkins University. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Quinnipiac University (Physician Assistant Program). He became a Certified Physician Executive in 1999. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Therrien has been granted several awards for teaching and leadership excellence. He has served on many committees both within his organizations and in the health care community.
